Main task:

Following the print portfolio meant that for my perliminary task i was required to; using DTP and an image manipulation program ( I chose to use photoshop ), produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some approperiatly laid out text and a masthead. Additionaly i had to produce mock-up of the layout of the contents page do demonstrate my grasp of DTP. However for the main task, i had to design the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine.

I decided to aim my research at existing music magazines such as Q, NME, Rolling Stone, and Kerrang. Between them they represented the style and genre that i am interested in.

http://undiscoveredbenji.wordpress.com/2009/02/26/r-e-s-e-a-r-c-h-front-covers/

http://undiscoveredbenji.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/r-e-s-e-a-r-c-h-contents-pages/

http://undiscoveredbenji.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/r-e-s-e-a-r-c-h-double-page-spreads/

When I started looking into the music magazine industry i found that there was very little mainstream publicity from the mainstream that covered small, upcoming band. I Feel that a Magazine devoted to them would be a great way to get them herd and give the public something new to read that would be interesting and not fade in with the rest of the magazines on a shelf. It would also be a good way to promote the th smaller venues. By creating a magaizne of this genre it is a great way to challange the conventions exsisting magazines have created. It was in this way of thinking that the name Unsung came across as literally perfect yet slightly ironic. I had the name of the magazine, ‘lucky 7′ in mind when i started as it to conjured up images of the ‘rock and roll’ life style with gambling, being famous, gigs, music and generally life as rock star. These were my two original ideas for my magazine and they would marketed at different auidences.

My research showed that i would need a mix of live photos and some studio shot photos. the live photos would make up the bulk of the photos i would be using in my magazine but i feel they are part of the reason that make NME and Kerrang look tacky when put next to rollingstones or Q. Whereas a studio shot photo represents that a lot more time, money and thought has gone into getting the photo perfect. It also means that the featured artist has spent some time with the magazine alone making an interview that seem more exclusive and personal. To get the live photos i attended several gigs and realised that colour photos were virtually impossible without the venue filling the room with smoke (dry ice or a similar system). To counteract this problem i took the photos in black and white when smoke wasnt being used. during the studio session i wa able to get the photos i wanted for the front cover, however being able to experiment with all the ideas for poses i had, i ended up having quite a hard time deciding whether or not to stick with my orignal idea of using a female artist on the cover or to use one of the others i’d taken that worked just as well.

I had planned on having the background to my front cover as simple as possible with a plain background behind the model but found this difficult to maintain the level of quality i was aiming for.

i tried using the female for the front cover but when i tried using the shot i had in mind of a male artist the page really came to life. this was major decision as it salvaged the Japanese sunburst page i had allready created.

By looking at other existing magazines i found that that there is quite a large gap in the music magazine world; between the very expensive magazines like rolling stone, q and mojo and the less expensive magazines like NME and Kerrang, the styles change dramatically. There doesn’t seem to be much around that has the quality of rolling stone but at a more reasonable price. i chose to ignore some the general themes that music magazines tend to follow; so in my magazine i dont have any huge gritty broken square fonts, but i like the impact that had so found an evenly space and well rounded font to use. the rest of the fonts are pretty clear, simple, and look a little more classy.i have kept to three fonts where possible and each font tends to play a similar role throughout the magazine. My magazine has a rebellious streak to it as it keeps breaking the rules of the conventions that make music magazines stand out as a genre but is still recognizable at a glance that its about music. I decided that my magazine should be subtly influenced by the featured band, in this case, bamboo loud – with their logo being a panda wearing headphones. I thought that their album cover and style had a Japanese feel to it. this posed me with a problem; to follow the glam rock style of the band or follow the Japanese influence. i opted of the Japanese influence when i started looking into the culture. The sunburst stood out to me the most as a significant feature that i could use to represent the culture in my work. Sticking to the safety of genre conventions i stuck with the existing colour theme black, white and red, but added the yellow and the sunburst to make it stand out. I used some splatter effects to give the page some texture as it worked extremely well in some of the pages i looked at in my research. to provide continuity in my piece i used the sunburst on all of my pages and some more splatter on the contents page. i used the contents page to introduce some more subtle Japanese styling by putting some bamboo shoots and plants at the bottom of the page and some foliage in the top left corner. i also dropped the splatter on the right hand side of the page in favour of some Japanese text. to keep these additions subtle i lowered the opacity and changed some of the layer styles from normal to overlay so that it would interact with the background and appear to blend in.

My media text represents a few different social groups, primarily it aims an auidence aged over 16 and that appricate music. By not being filled with mainstream bands it represents reader as mature and open minded. a secondary auidence for my text would be talent scouts or runners for other media production companies who’s task it is to source music for adverts, flims or television shows etc. The purpose of my text fits perfectly to both of these groups.

Compared to the magazines that i have already researched, i believe that my magazine is would be a good competitor to magazines like NME, Kerrang and Q. I think that my magazine’s main rival would be Mojo magazine. It covers the widest range of music of the magazines i could find. Unfortunately my magazine isn’t directly comparable to Q in every way as it is set out promote new/unherd bands and venues insted of the usual reporting on the already famous bands. My magazine would fit in with the publisher’s general attitude towards music as Kerrang has quite a large influence in gigs and promotion that my magazine to follow suit and complete that branch of their institution. The japanese theme running through my magazine is one of the the ways my artifact challanges the conventions of existing media texts.

When i showed my magazine front cover to family that hadn’t seen it any stage of its construction, i was asked, ‘which magazine is that?’. With comments like this about my work i am confident that the intended audience will be quite pleased when they buy the magazine that it will not only be of interest but quality too. I belive that the “odd” look to my magazine will be what attracts it to the potential auidence; being in a lower price bracket but of a higher quailty than its competetors the unique subtle themes that run through the text for example the Japanese Sunbursts.

Sine starting this course i have learnt a lo about the technologies that the media institution are using, some that have been pioneered for the institution and have made so many ideas possible. Photoshop is one of the biggest programs when you think about creative software, it enables users to manipulate photos create posters, infact it ives you the freedom to do what ever you want. when i statred my preliminary task the thought of my double page spread for the music magazin task was litterally a figmen of my imagination. I have been able to create an a3page made up of around 60 smaller magazine covers and then make them subtle enough to have a full double page article on top of it. i have also learnt about how eas it is to publish my own work and have it availlable anywhere in the world.

My product would work very well with the intended auidence as it adresses all the issues they would be interested. i think that it would also attract the eye of those who read the mainstream magazines.

Bamboo loud! The result of a mid-life crisis, ‘well it was either this, or get a Harley’. So out came the guitars. David Bright and Ray Smith decided to have another crack at starting in a band!

Ironically, the band members; Steve Pringle, David Bright, Ray Smith, Mike Bullot and Stuart Pringle were united through their children as many a PTA meeting that their wives were attending left them standing alone with only their love of music and the dreaded; ‘Is this really it?’ feeling to break the ice.

And so the tale begins!

‘Start a band, have fun. It’s better to play with someone else than play with yourself!’ With this attitude in mind the foundations had been laid with Devilish David Bright and Rockin’ Ray Smith holding the first rehearsal.

Priceless Steve Pringle was next to wander onto the scene. When he showed up, he picked up a bass guitar for the first time, learnt to play it, and well, never ever left!

And, with this prestigeous start, one became two, two became three. and as the saying goes: ‘the rest is history’

The musical melee received a substantial injection of stability when ‘Stunning Stand-in Stuart Pringle’ became, out of the blue, their official drummer.

If three’s a crowd then four is one man short of a full scale riot!

The final chapter in this story came a year later, when wrapped in a not so shiny, coating of Mad Man Mike Bullot; ‘strangling a Tom jones record at a pub karaoke night’. However the man whose style destroyed Tom Jones came with a silver lining, and when invited to the next rehearsal made the perfect addition to complete the crew and start the sensational riot that followed.

The band, wishing to become an overnight success decided to give themselves a prominant logo. this was inspired by a trip to Hong Kong by Mike who saw for his first time saw a real life Panda- fell in love with iconic image. the Panda became their logo and, with some clever wit, sealed the title of this tall tale… BAMBOO LOUD, had seen its first glimpse of daylight!

Fitting the band around work and family life makes it the perfect getaway with time to relax, enjoy a drink and make some music. Things however took an unexpected turn when Elaine, (David’s wife) organised a charity event, at which Bamboo Loud were unleashed into the civilised world! Since then they have had a steady supply of followers and a growing reputation as they feed their Panda on the crowds of a variety of venues including “Host” and “The Half Moon” and were invited to perform at the infamous ‘Music in the Park’ event.

Starting out Bamboo Loud played a selection of covers including songs by T-Rex, Primal Scream and Kings of Leon. As confidence grew, throughout the band, their own style began to shine through. Bamboo Loud have evolved their own style influenced by 70’s glam rock and combining it with more rock, then tearing it all up, ripping the rules up out of the ground and seeding their own roots – redefining classic rock as we know it.

The seeds are nurtured with their original songs starting out life as a collection of correlating chords and lyrics founded by sex and life experiences. The development of lyrics and song content falls into the skilled hands of song-smith David Bright, – but ever eager to be heard Ray Smith lends a helping hand from time to time with some inspiration as well as drink

There is some speculation and rumours surrounding Ray’s influence but word in the herd is that it comes from a previous relationship he had with a certain ex girlfriend!

To keep most venues happy Bamboo Loud perform a well thought out line up of covers and original material but are looking for more adventurous venues that will allow them to show off their undeniably unique sound to the world!

The covers in their untamed line up include; Red Morning Light, by King of Leon, T-Rex, Primal Scream and Rockin’ in the free world, by Neil Diamond; but after speaking to some loyal fans at a gig, even they find it difficult to pick out the covers as the Bamboo Loud breathe a new lease of life into them.

‘Getting famous would be a bonus but we’re in it for the art’

Bamboo Loud are a completely independent band, unsigned and truly (UnSung) heroes of the music world. ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’ is the irrefutably amazing debut album that is now on sale and set to give your speakers one hell of a run transforming your home, work or even your car into part of their distinct world with the perfect compilation of mind blowing tracks and amazing quality.

Ok you’ve read all the puplicity you will ever need to read and now be itching to buy….To hear the band you can find them at www.myspace.com/bambooloud or you can purchase their debut album ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’ from iTunes or by getting in contact with them. If you buy the album directly from the band you will find two exclusive bonus tracks that aren’t available on iTunes! You can even show your support with a t-shirt, bag, hoodie or one of many other goodies that they have!

Bamboo Loud would like to thank to Neil Flynn – producer/engineer for all of his help and their loyal fans.

‘It’s never too late to start a band!’ – Bamboo Loud
